The Dangers Of Tanning Beds

Tanning bed safety measured using the meds meter

Tanning beds have become a popular alternative to natural sun tanning. With the tanning bed burns and other the dangers of tanning beds are now monitored with high tech meters. Tanning beds and Meds meter go hand in hand to ensuring our safety, The five meters used in the tanning industry are the: UVA/UVB Meter, the UVB Meter, the UV Index Meter, the MED/hr Meter and the UVC Meter. Tanning bed safety has come along way in the past five years.

Many people have shifted towards tanning beds because they are more convenient, they are reasonably priced to use and they are confident about their safety. One of the other perks is that you can get your tan much quicker than you can by lying in the sun, although the scenery may not be as good.

With these high tech monitors, health risks associated with tanning can be effectively monitored. These meters allow the tanning industry to ensure their tanning beds are performing optimally. They also provide valuable information for studies, so that valuable improvements can be made to increasing safety.

The UVA/UVB Meter measures the total radiant energy (UVA and UVB). The UVB Meter does just what it says, it measures only the UVB. The UV Index Meter measures the Erythema Action Spectra- which is used to calculate the "Minutes to Burn" figure--in ultraviolet index units. The MED/hr Meter measures the same Spectra, but in MEDs per hour. Lastly, the UVC Meter. Measure the output of UVC wavelengths, which are the shortest, most powerful wavelengths produced and the most dangerous.

In order to calculate UVA, a salon owner simply tests the UVB levels using the UVB meter and then subtracts that figure from the total found with the UVA/UVB meter. To calculate the percentages of UVA and UVB a lamp produces, the individual figures are divided by the UVA/UVB figure.

Using modern technology is a win-win for everyone. The salon owners are better able to optimize their beds producing happier customers. The medical community is able to gather valuable data for their studies. The client is able to relax and enjoy their tanning session more, knowing safety concerns are being addressed.

I’m sure we will see even more advancement in the next few years. We may even see technology that can monitor the levels of UV the skin is absorbing, and perhaps even shut the bed off when we reach our maximum dosage. The tanning industry is really still in infancy, and the future is unwritten. Tan safely and quickly with Tan Towels.  They really work!
