Girls who are pregnant should know the tanning beds effects on the body, and the health risks associated with pregnancy and tanning booths
Pregnant girls in tanning beds need to use caution. You need to find out if pregnancy and tanning booths are okay and what the tanning bed effects on the body are. There are both positive and negative effects to using a tanning bed. Before one can discuss the harmful effects of tanning equipment and increased sun exposure, it is important to understand how ultraviolet light affects the skin.
Natural sunlight is made up of two types of ultraviolet light [UV], UVA and UVB. The UVA rays are a longer wavelength, therefore penetrating deep into the dermal layer of the skin. It is believed exposure to these rays is directly tied to the increasing rates of melanoma. These rays do not burn the skin, and do not give any indication of overexposure, making them deadly.
UVB rays are a much shorter wavelength so they only affect the outer layers of the skin. UVB is known as the burning ray. Too much exposure and you turn that attractive shade of red.
Originally it was believed that the UVB rays were the most dangerous, which is why tanning beds were developed that only used UVA rays. However, studies have shown this is not true.
Tanning beds and sun lamps usually emit between 93% and 99% UVA radiation, which dramatically increasing the benefits of developing a deep golden tan. This output is as much as three times the UVA radiation given off by the sun.
UVB rays damage the skin by popping capillaries. These are the bad tanning effects, but the tan occurs when melanin particles are oxidized by the UVA radiations. UVB rays are responsible for premature aging, wrinkles, various skin disorders, and the less serious form of skin cancer.
For some the looking good and feeling good with that beautiful golden tan is worth the risks associated with tanning. For others the dangers are just too high to take the risk.
What ever you decision, make the right decision for you. Don’t be pressured by peers, commercials, or the tanning industry. If you choose to tan then be smart and use common sense to stay safe while you get that sexy tan!
