High Tech Tanning Booths

Tanning beds & teenagers = tanning bed risks

Each year more and more teens are flocking to tanning salons to use the new high tech tanning booths. They are looking to improve their looks and self confidence, forgetting about tanning bed risks. However, there are some serious concerns about tanning beds & teenagers.

This age group is the most vulnerable to hype and commercials advertising how good you can look with a tan. Sex appeal is a very alluring marketing tool. The ultimate tan is available by visiting your local salon and using its high tech tanning booth. The glamour for teens may coming to an end as government officials quickly work to pass legislation to ban teens from indoor tanning.

The health risks to teenagers is especially alarming. It is so alarming that the World Health Organization has issued a warning to people under the age of 18, to stay away from tanning beds because of the increased skin cancer risks. High tech tanning booths may result in even higher risks.

In many ways tanning beds have become a crutch for the ego. You think you look better, so you feel better. Many times there is no other reason for using the bed except to enhance your appearance.

That’s why teens can be especially vulnerable. At their age common sense is often used, so they won’t be thinking about over exposure, or health risks. I mean we were all indestructible as teen’s right? So someone has to make sure these young adults don’t become skin cancer statistics in the future.

Melanoma the most serious type of skin cancer is also on the rise. Every year over 60,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 8000 people die from it. The WHO states that the popularity of high tech tanning booths and tanning beds is partly to blame.

The American Academy Of Dermatology [AAD] went as far as proposing a complete ban on teens using tanning salons. In order for this proposal to become law it will need to be passed by each individual state.

In March of this year, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that made teen visits to a tanning salon illegal in California without parental consent.

California isn't the only one, as a number of states begin to implement proposals to pass similar laws. For example Suffolk County , in New York, is banning anyone under the age of 14 from using sun beds, and teens 14-18 must be accompanied by a parent.

In Nassau County, New York, a proposal calls for everybody under 18 to have signed parental approval and teens under 16 to have a parent with them when they go to tanning salons.

No matter what laws are passed or not passed, it is important for you as a parent to make sure your teens stay safe, to the best of your ability. If you are going to let them use a tanning bed then make certain they understand how important it is to follow the rules. After all, when your 70 you want to be enjoying the company of your adult children right?
