Sun Protection Clothing for Athletes

Sunscreen can protect you from the dangers of tanning

For many of us, spending the day in the sun is an everyday occurrence, even if we are aware of the dangers of tanning; we may not have a choice. Wearing sun protection clothing for athletes is a wise choice to protect our skin when we are outdoors. It’s also a good idea to use sunscreen on exposed skin, to prevent against over-exposure to harmful rays.

Look for a non-greasy formula that won’t drip and offers the correct SPF for your skin and exposure times. Add the sun protection clothing which are light weight, breathable, but block the harmful rays, and you’ll be ready to spend the day outdoors.

Any product that protects the skin from UV radiation is called a sunscreen. A hat or sun protection clothing can actually be considered a sunscreen, but most of us think of sunscreens as coming out of a bottle. There are plenty of sun lotions to choose from offering various levels of SPF protection.

SPF stands for sun protection factor, and it is the term used to describe a products ability to stop your skin from burning. SPF’s ranges from 2 to 50, and the higher the SPF the more protection offered to your skin. Don’t be fooled into thinking if you apply sunscreen you “can’t” burn. This is not true. All SPF’s allow some UVB through. What sunscreen really does is extend the length of time you can stay in the sun before burning.

An SPF of 15 or higher is recommended. For fair skinned or fair haired individuals a higher SPF is recommended. Be sure that the sunscreen you buy is broad spectrum. This will give you protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

In general, you should apply your sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before you go outside. Don’t skimp, apply a generous coating of sunscreen to all exposed skin, and then let it soak in. Don’t forget your ears, nose, and neck. Remember to also apply a sunscreen lip balm to your lips.

If you are sweating or swimming it is important to reapply every two hours, unless you are using a waterproof version. These should be reapplied every four hours as they too loose strength, just not as fast.

Sunscreen and sun protection clothing can be your best weapons for protecting your skin from the daily assault of the suns radiation.
