The Tanning Bed Effects On The Body
Girls in tanning beds wonder about the risks of pregnancy and tanning booths
If you were a fly in the wall, you would find all kinds of girls in tanning beds. The tanning bed effects on the body can be good and bad. Pregnancy and tanning booths require some special attention.
We all know how much better we feel when we’ve got a tan. But with all the controversy about the effects of tanning it’s hard to decide if it’s good for you or bad for you, and what about if you’re pregnant?
All you need to do is pick up a paper or turn on the TV and you’ll hear both the good and bad. The salons are obviously telling you how “good” tanning is for you and how “safe” it is when you use a tanning bed. In the past few years the tanning industry has taken an aggressive stand to defend and promote their industry.
Even health officials have to admit that it is beneficial in some cases, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder, usually called SAD. Studies have shown good results with indoor tanning and people suffering from SAD.
But then you’ll also hear medical professionals telling you studies have shown that tanning beds are just as dangerous as tanning with mother nature’s sun. That the use of tanning beds has been directly associated with melanoma, the worst kind of skin cancer.
In 1994 the American Medical Association actually adopted a resolution that would have banned the sale and use of tanning equipment for non medical purposes. The FTC denied their request, but for the AMA to take such a drastic stand you really have to wonder how serious tanning is?
If you’re pregnant that adds another twist, is it healthy for the baby? Is it better or worse for you then when you are not pregnant? The industry states that using a tanning bed during your pregnancy is just as safe as tanning outside in the sun.
Currently there are no studies completed on the effects of tanning beds on an unborn child. In theory the UV light from a tanning bed never reaches the baby so they are never at risk. That said you should follow doctors orders during the first trimester and not do anything that raises your body’s temperature, this would include tanning beds. Check with your doctor before using a tanning bed.
Tanning is one of those conflicting life needs – on one hand we want the sun bronzed skin that makes us look good and feel great. We also want to get our dose of Vitamin C and D. But we don’t want the wrinkles or pre-mature aging long exposure to the sun can cause, and we certainly don’t want skin cancer
So what do you believe? Who do you trust? And What should you do? The key to any type of tanning be it sun or tanning bed, is to play smart! As with many things, moderation is the key. Use sunscreen, don’t tan for long sessions and don’t overdo your exposure. Take care of your skin by moisturizing often.
So remember moderation, moderation, moderation!! Common sense will go along way to allow you to have a nice tan and enjoy the health benefits, while keeping your risks to a minimum.
