Tips on tanning beds and sunless tanning booths

By following proper tanning bed procedures, you can keep yourself tanned and looking like you just returned from a tropical island. Not sure about tanning beds, then why not try the new sunless tanning booths for a quick, safe tan. Here are some tips and tanning bed procedures to help keep you safe:

  • 1. Always tan in moderation – more isn’t better and by staying within the suggested guidelines you reduce the risk of experiencing health issues.
  • 2. Do not over extend the recommended tanning session length or use it every day.
  • 3. Do everything in your power to not burn. Burning is directly linked to melanoma.
  • 4. If you’re unsure about the do’s and don’ts ask the salon attendants. They are your first line of difference.
  • 5. Use the shortest period of time to get the most effect. In other words staying 20 minutes rather than 15 may not produce enough benefit to outweigh the additional health risks.
  • 6. Do not use a tanning bed if you have had skin cancer in the past.
  • 7. Do not use a tanning bed if you are pregnant without your Doctors permission.
  • 8. Split up tanning sessions into shorter more frequent sessions. So if you want a 20 minute session but the salon says that’s too long, do a 13 minute one day and a 7 minute the next day.
  • 9. If you have suffer from seasonal associative disorder or depression that appears to be related to winter months, talk to your doctor about using tanning sessions to make you feel better.
  • 10. Always use indoor sun tanning lotion with the correct SPF for your skin tone and your level of tan. These lotions or gels are best purchased from knowledgeable salon staff who can ensure you get a product that will work for you.
  • 11. Cover areas of skin not used to sun exposure or expose for only short periods of time until a base tan is established. These areas will burn very quickly and produce very painful burns.
  • 12. Do not use a tanning bed if you have an infection or illness that could be transmitted to others.
  • 13. Don’t suntan if you are on medication that may cause photosensitivity such as antibiotics, antidepressants, and antihistamines. If you’re not sure then check with your pharmacist or doctor.
  • 14. Make sure you know the salons cleaning procedures for their tanning beds. Ask them what there procedures are, have a quick check of the bed to make sure it meets your standards.
  • 15. Wear proper eye goggles at all times to prevent serious damage to your eyes.
  • 16. Do not continue tanning if you develop a rash, blisters, a burn, or any skin irregularities.
  • 17. Moisturize thoroughly after every session to keep your skin soft and glowing. Best to use a moisturizer rich in nutrients to keep your skin healthy and glowing.
  • 18. Do not allow your children or teenagers to use a tanning bed, as they are not safe for anyone under the age of 18.

Tanning beds are either / or UVB UVA rays to tan the skin. Both types of rays have been contributed to health problems. Tanning both indoors, and outside have been attributed to increased skin cancer risks, eye damage including retina and cataracts, premature aging and wrinkling, and weakened connective tissue.

Some experts believe that indoor tanning may actually be riskier than outdoor tanning, since you don’t get the “burn warning”, so whether you are tanning indoors or outdoors limit your exposure time

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, more than 1 million people visit tanning salons every day, so it’s quite apparent we are not ready to give up our golden tans. So play by the same rules whether you’re tanning indoors or out. By following tanning bed procedures, and using common sense you will let you get that beautiful bronze tan and stay safe!
