Tanning Beds and Teens
When using a tanning bed always use indoor tanning bed lotions and tanning bed goggles
Your teenage daughter has been begging you to go to the tanning salon. Before you say yes, know the facts about tanning beds and teens. Even with proper indoor tanning bed lotions, and tanning bed goggles, the WHO says your kids aren’t safe!
The World Health Organization has issued a warning to people under the age of 18. The warning says they should stay away from tanning beds because of the increased risk of skin cancer associated with them.
Teenage girls want to look good for the summer months, and so of course they want to get a head start on the tanning season using a tanning bed. Then they want to maintain that perfect tan the same way. This was why the WHO released the advisory.
Over the past sever years the concerns have grown over the use of tanning beds for no other reason than to “look good.” It has become socially desirable for everyone to have a tan, and that’s concerning the health organization.
The data is in, and directly correlates a relationship between tanning beds and increased skin cancer cases. In the United States, skin cancer has become the most common form of cancer.
The American Cancer Society estimates more than 1 million cases of basal cell cancer occurs each year. This type of cancer does have a fairly high cure rate, but still an average of 2000 people die from it every year.
Melanoma the most serious type of skin cancer, is also on the rise. Every year over 60,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 8000 people die from it.
The WHO states that the popularity of tanning and tanning beds is partly to blame.
The American Academy Of Dermatology [AAD] went as far as proposing a complete ban on teens using tanning salons. In order for this proposal to become law it will need to be passed by each individual state. Dr Spencer said, “Currently a law banning minors form using a tanning salon is before the California state legislature.” If passed, this will make California the first state to ban teens.
The AAD is also applying more pressure to the industry as a whole. What they would prefer to see is an outright ban of tanning beds, unless for medical reasons. That’s not likely to happen with an industry that makes $6-8 billion dollars a year from indoor tanning.
The AAD would settle for all tanning devices having to carry a warning about the dangers, as well as having every user sign a warning statement that outlines the hazards and health risks of using the tanning equipment.
Whether you choose to let your teen using a tanning bed or not, is entirely up to you at this point. Teens can apply a great deal of pressure often swaying you to rethink your decision. The problem with tanning is the “bad effects” won’t be seen for 10 years or more, so it’s hard to say “no” to your teen getting that great tan.
Based on the information that is available, do them a big favor and just say No! Yes they are probably not going to be happy with you, but 10 or 15 years from now when they are healthy and free of skin cancer, they are certain to thank you!
