The saturn tanning bed and sunstar tanning bed are popular choices
Tanning Beds, seasonal affect disorder, and depression. What links them together? SAD is a form of depression that occurs when a person does not receive enough sunshine. By increasing sun exposure, SAD Symptoms are decreased. Some of the studies conducted used the Saturn tanning bed and the sunstar tanning bed, and all showed promising results.
Experts believe that SAD is somehow triggered by the brain’s response to the decrease in daylight. No one really knows how this happens but there are some theories that focus on the role of sunlight and the production of hormones in the brain.
Experts believe that the production of melatonin and serotonin, both chemicals in the brain are interrupted or decreased with the lack of sunlight. These two hormones regulate the sleep-wake cycle, as well as mood and energy levels. The production of these hormones is triggered by sunlight or daylight.
In the fall and winter when there are less daylight hours, levels of melatonin and serotonin decrease. For some this causes the depression known as SAD. Studies indicate increasing the levels of serotonin can ward of this seasonal depression.
SAD can affect anyone – adults, teens, children – no one is immune. Females are four times more likely to develop SAD, as well has people where depression runs in the family. About 6% of the population suffers from SAD. It is more common in areas where winters are longer and darker, supporting the theory that it directly ties to light exposure.
SAD can range from mild to severe. The milder it is the less it interferes with daily living. The more severe the harder it is for the person to cope with day to day activity. Symptoms disappear as soon as the days begin to get longer and there are more hours of sunshine.
The symptoms of SAD will begin to appear as the days become shorter and there is less hours of sun. The symptoms can include all or any of the following:
Change in mood – a person may become sad or irritable when they are not receiving the amount of sun their brain needs. They may be easily brought to tears and not be able accept any type of criticism
No Spark or Enjoyment – a person may loose interest in his/her life. They will have difficulty enjoying anything. It’s like there’s no spark. The simplest tasks may be overwhelming.
Decreased Energy – a person may be more tired than usual. They may complain of little or no energy to complete even the smallest task.
Eating Habits Change – a person suffering from SAD may crave comfort foods and tend to overeat.
Unable to Concentrate – SAD can affect concentrations thus interfere with job performance or school performance. The person is unable to concentrate and then becomes unmotivated.
Recluse – a person can become reclusive, not wanting to socialize with others.
There are several treatments used to improve the wellbeing of a person suffering from SAD. Many include the use of drugs that chemically alter the hormone levels in the brain.
The simplest solution is to increase the amount of light the person receives. This is where tanning beds have proven very beneficial. When the light is available to a person the symptoms go away. So using a tanning bed on a regular basis, replacing normal bulbs in the home with full spectrum bulbs and getting outside whenever the sun is out, will help a great deal.
For light therapy to work the retinas have to absorb some of the light. So if you are using a tanning bed, use a low wattage bed where you don’t need to wear the goggles or remove the goggles as directed by your doctor. Using a tanning bed to replace the sun until spring arrives has allowed thousands of people to once again lead normal lives.
