Time In Tanning Bed

If you spend too much time in the tanning bed you could get tanning bed itching or tanning bed acne

You’ve heard lots about tanning beds, but you still haven’t had your questions answered. You’re still wondering if the time in tanning beds causes tanning bed itching or tanning bed acne, and most of all you want to know if fertility and tanning go together safely. After all you’re planning a family in the future.

Over time you’ve probably heard it all; good, bad, half truths, and full out lies. So let’s sort myths from truths.

Yes you can get tanning bed itching, often referred to as tanners itch. Overexposure, too many sessions in too short of time can cause itchy skin. So can birth control pills and a host of other medications. Sometimes a good moisturizer is all you need to fix the problem. Itching can also be caused an allergy to disinfectant the salon uses, or an allergy to your lotion. Try changing your lotion, and you may want to ask why they use to clean their beds.

In cases tanning beds will actually help acne by drying it up. Dermatologist will sometimes recommend tanning lamps to a person with severe acne. However, that said, if your skin is oily or the lotion you are using is too oily, you could actually land up with a break out. If you are acne prone it’s best to stick to lotions or gels that don’t clog the skin, otherwise tanning should be good for your zits!

Fertility relating to tanning is kind of like one of those black abysses. No real answers, lots of theories, but no ones going to say one way or the other. So the answer to the question is “I don’t know what affects tanning will have on fertility.”

In theory it should not affect it. Women have tanning in the sun for centuries and still manage to produce healthy offspring. So since a tanning bed emits the same UV rays but in safe dosages, you shouldn’t have any worries about fertility. But that’s just my theory.

Now if you are pregnant you should definitely “Not” use a tanning bed during the first trimester. In fact it is very important that you consult your doctor about using a tanning bed through out your pregnancy. Studies have shown harmful effects on the fetus during the first trimester due to over heating, but ongoing studies indicate this could be a concern for all nine months.

If you can’t find the answers to your questions, ask the attendants at the salon you go to. Most attendants are well versed on indoor tanning. If you aren’t comfortable speaking with the attendants, then talk to your doctor, or ask a nurse.

There is also plenty of good information from dermatologists and the medical association, provided online. So like with everything in life, believe one third of what you hear, research one third, and throw out the last one third.
